This company’s compliance training needed an overhaul. For years, it had simply included 60 minutes of text and images, with a quiz at the end. My task was to take what they had and create something engaging and interactive. In this sample, you’ll see a short, interactive, module focused on email safety and phishing.
Personalization
I used variables within Articulate Storyline 360 so that the user can enter their name at the beginning of the module. This results in each email being addressed directly to the user, increasing engagement and making the training feel more relevant and tailored.
Benefit: Personalization draws the learner into the experience, creating a sense of ownership and connection that boosts attention and knowledge retention.
Real-Life Scenarios
Rather than presenting static information on email phishing, this module is learner-focused, placing the user in the center of the action. The user is presented with a full email inbox and tasked with identifying and cleaning out potentially harmful emails. A checkmark is added next to each email after a decision is made, creating a sense of accomplishment as the inbox is cleaned out.
Benefit: Immersive, scenario-based learning mirrors real-world tasks, enhancing the learner’s ability to apply skills in their job and building confidence in identifying phishing attempts.
Engaging Interactivity: The hands-on task of sorting through emails keeps learners actively engaged, improving focus and retention.
Relevance: The use of a realistic email inbox and personalized names makes the module relatable and directly applicable to the learner’s daily work.
Immediate Feedback: Learners receive instant feedback on their decisions, reinforcing correct actions and addressing mistakes without delay.
Gamification Elements: The visual checkmarks and the goal of cleaning the inbox add a gamified element that motivates learners to complete the task.
Modernized Format: The bite-sized, interactive module replaces a lengthy, outdated format, making the training more approachable and effective.
Instructional Designer: I designed this module’s structure, ensuring alignment with learning objectives and incorporating interactive elements.
Writer: I wrote each email scenario and decision prompt.
eLearning Developer: I built this module in Articulate Storyline 360, using variables and custom triggers to personalize the learning experience.
Visual Designer: Created a visually appealing email inbox interface and maintained a professional and cohesive design throughout the module.
